July 1st marks my debut as a Harlequin BLAZE author and I can hardly wait to see the book on the shelves. How did I end up at BLAZE after writing so many big fat historicals? Well, like everything else in my life, it's a story. I heard rumblings that BLAZE was trying exciting new things, and I ran into Ball-of-Enthusiasm Senior Editor Brenda Chin at RWA not long ago. She and author Hope Tarr invited me to lunch with them and Brenda pitched some of the great things -- including historicals! -- that BLAZE had in mind. Her vision for "big sexy books in a small book format" struck me as something whose time had come. Before long I was hooked and signed on to do two historicals and some contemporary things, too.
When my writer friends heard I'd signed with BLAZE, they joked that I usually take 60,000 words to say hello! Well, now they'll have to eat those words. After writing 120,000 to 140,000 word books forever, I found this shorter historical format a dream come true. My first manuscript came in at (read 'em and weep, guys!) 55,762 words!
Writing MAKE ME YOURS was the most fun I'd had at the computer in years. The characters were compelling, the story came naturally, and the tighter focus on "pure romance" was so freeing! You know, my favorite heroines have always been feisty women with the gumption to go after what they want. And my favorite heroes are strong, stubborn men who think they know best but get taken to school by smart, sexy women. Yikes! I've been writing a BLAZE heroine for years and didn't know it!
And now RT Book Reviews has given MAKE ME YOURS four and a half stars and a TOP PICK rating. I'm -- blush -- in heaven. Come on over to the Ask The Author forum and chat me up! I'm so deliriously happy, I'll probably spill my guts and tell you anything you want to know!
