Shapeshifter and Volkswagen mechanic Mercy Thompson is caught up in werewolf pack business. She has no choice but to help out the werewolves if she wants to survive the week. Mercy lives in a world where not only are werewolves and vampires real, but so are witches and other members of the fae. Some of the lesser fae have been forced out into the public, but the other groups are still very much underground, even though it appears that's going to have to change.

Mercy's a compelling protagonist, and how she interacts with other paranormals is also quite interesting. Briggs has chosen an interesting moment in time to set this book, when the paranormals are on the cusp of being revealed to the world at large, which is a refreshing change from most other books set in similar worlds. The story hums along like a well-tuned engine, keeping the reader engaged through the tumultuous climax. (Feb., 304 pp., $7.99)
