What's The Appeal?
They have the looks, the attitude, the reputation and women
find them irresistible (in fact, we like them so much, this is
our second theme spotlight featuring those rogues!) But why?
What's so attractive about a jaded, dangerous man with the
inability to communicate with, well, anyone? The appeal is the
riddle they present, because we, like the heroine, know that
behind that apathetic attitude (or rebellious behavior) lurks a
lonely soul. The bad boy is fundamentally a noble character, but
he's misunderstood, unloved, and usually lurking on the fringe of
acceptable society. His edgy attitude is his defense against a
world that's mistreated him, but his underlying principles are
still honorable. Our heroine recognizes this, and tries to heal
all the pain he's suffered. She alone can touch the gentler side
of our rebel.
But these stories aren't solely about the
heroine saving the hero. The bad boy also helps his ladylove. He
shows her it's all right to partake in pleasure, to occasionally
walk on the wild side. In many ways, they liberate each other
from the strictures of their own perspectives. Bad boy romances
confirm the idea that people can change. And bad boys allow us to
revel in the darker side of life, but also see that, in the end,
decency still prevails. Good conquers all, and happy endings
really do existeven if you are bad to the bone!
