What's The Appeal?
The Appeal of Real-Size Heroines
"Dangerous Curves" describes a different brand of heroine, one
with a curvy figure and realistic weight. No longer must the
female lead character be willowy and beautiful or petite and
delicate. Now, real-size women are getting their place in the
sun. Today's heroines can be realistically proportioned and still
be sensual and alluring, daring and strong.
The appeal of these curvy characters is obvious. Average women do
not usually look like super-models, thin to the point of
anorexia. Generally, we all have imperfections, certain aspects
of our physical appearance we would like to change. This reality
can make it hard for readers to relate to the stunning beauties
depicted in romance novels. But now, we're starting to see
believable heroines that the reader can identify with. They are
still sassy and sexy, and the heroes find them desirable because
of their voluptuous shapes, not in spite of them.
Romances feed our fantasies, and while it's fun to imagine
ourselves as svelte, lithe creatures, in many ways, it's even
better to visualize a gorgeous hero wanting us exactly the way we
are. Certainly, attraction is based on physical magnetism, but
it's also based on the people we are on the inside. Finally,
romance novels acknowledge that beauty comes in many
forms--and that everyone deserves true love, no matter what
their shape or size.
