What's The Appeal?
Picture this: A snooty hairdresser has just
somehow managed to make your head look like an artichoke, and
charged you a fortune for it. Horrified, you nonetheless leave a
huge tip, slink out the door, then go home and burst into tears.
Or this: walking past a construction site, you're inundated with
"Give it to me, baby!" and "Nice rack!" Fuming, you bite your
tongue and hurry past. These and other petty indignities in life
can sure make a girl want to...kick butt! And that's a good
thing.
Just think how the world would change if women threw
off their "nice girl" training, if they refused to put up with
any garbage, from anyone. If they struck back--quick and
hard, with words or actions--at sexual harassers, patronizing
employers, deadbeat dads or womanizing boyfriends. Or if, say,
like Marlene Ciampi does in Robert Tanenbaum's wonderful series,
someone stalked the stalkers and beat up the abusive husbands.
Tough heroines inspire us, show us how to take care of ourselves,
and at the very least, are extremely satisfying to read about. Go
forth and kick it, chicks!
